This DFW City Was Named The Second Hottest Suburb In The Nation

When Eric Hogue and his wife moved to Wylie in the early 1990s, he needed to hook up his ice maker, so he drove downtown to find a hardware store.

When an employee asked Hogue what he needed it for, he reached down and handed him a tool from his personal tool box. "You just need it for a one time thing," the man said. "Bring it back when you're done."

"I told my wife, 'We're not in Plano or Dallas anymore, this is a unique place.' And that's kind of the mindset of Wylie," said Hogue, who's been the mayor for nine years. "And it's still that way to this day."

Wylie was honored by realtor.com today as one of the hottest suburbs in the country, ranking No. 2 in the nation behind the Northeast/Montbello suburb of Denver.

When Hogue moved to the city it had 8,000 people. Today, more than 46,000 people call Wylie home, according to census estimates for 2015.

The specific zip code that's hot is 75098, realtor.com said, which falls in Wylie and the small neighboring town of St. Paul.

"Homes in Wylie received 2.4 times more views on realtor.com than a typical home," the study said. "The listing price of properties in this zip code grew 18.7 percent annually over the last three years."

Hogue thinks Wylie has grown so much because of its strong school district. Also, Wylie used to be popular for its starter homes, he said. But now, there's also a focus on second and third homes to keep people there.

"We realize the obvious. People are going to work in Dallas and Plano and the cities that are close to freeways, and we know we don't have that," Hogue said.

There's also a stronger retail presence in the city, which is keeping residents' money inside town lines.

Hogue recalled when a Super Target opened and he got an email from a resident. She said she missed the cows that used to occupy the field where the Target now stands.

"And I said, 'You know what m'am, I miss those cows, too,'" Hogue said. "'But if I said no to the Super Target, they would have built across the street in Murphy and all those property taxes and sales tax dollars would go to Murphy and not Wylie.'"
