The plan includes more than 200 new lane miles and a reinvestment of more than $1 billion into roadway improvements and construction, according to the NTTA.

Top priorities in the next five years include extensions to the Dallas North Tollway, President George Bush Turnpike and Chisolm Trail Parkway.

“We only build roads that are requested by the communities. We do not actually promote our own agenda of roads,” NTTA board Director Bill Moore said during an update at a Sept. 23 Collin County Commissioners Court meeting.

Dallas North Tollway

One project will extend the Dallas North Tollway north to the Grayson County line.

The DNT currently runs from I-35 East in downtown Dallas to US 380 at the border between Frisco and Prosper.

Construction of a four-lane bridge is currently being built over US 380. Once the bridge is complete, the NTTA will add another four-lane segment of tollway between US 380 and FM 428 in Celina.

“Construction is expected to start next month on the main lane extension over [US] 380,” said Elizabeth Mow, the assistant executive director of infrastructure at the NTTA. “The Dallas North Tollway will go over 380, giving more relief to that very busy intersection. And believe it or not, we are in the planning phases of extending those main lanes even farther all the way to [FM] 428 in Celina.”

This will be followed by another segment extending to the Grayson County line. Construction is expected to start in 2025 and will cost about $500 million, according to the NTTA.

President George Bush Turnpike

Two extensions are planned on the east and west sides of President George Bush Turnpike.

One extension, called “the 360 elbow,” includes a 5-mile tollway connection in Grand Prairie between the PGBT and the 360 Tollway. This connector will cross the line between Dallas and Tarrant counties and is expected to cost about $370 million.

The other PGBT project will extend the tollway from I-30 in Garland south to I-20 in Sunnyvale. This project is expected to cost about $1.2 billion.

Chisholm Trail Parkway

Another project includes building out Chisholm Trail Parkway with an additional two lanes from the Johnson County line to US 67. Once complete, this road will be widened between I-30 in central Fort Worth to US 67 in Alvarado. This project is expected to cost about $240 million.

Dallas North Tollway corridor study

In addition to the roadway projects, the NTTA will also be conducting a $2 million corridor study on the DNT in an effort to identify ways to improve safety, traffic management and driver experience along the tollway.

The DNT is the busiest roadway in the NTTA’s system, according to Mow. The study will take about two years and is expected to run from 2020-22.

“Completion of all of these projects simply means safer, faster, more reliable transportation for all of our citizens,” Mow said.
